31 October is for self-lodgers. Here is what changes if you use an agent

Self-lodgers for the 2025–26 return are due on 31 October 2026. Being on a registered tax agent’s list before that date is what moves most people onto the later ATO lodgement program.

31 October is for self-lodgers. Here is what changes if you use an agent

Two calendars, not one

If you lodge your own 2025–26 individual tax return, the due date is 31 October 2026. That date falls on a Saturday, so the ATO generally treats the next business day — Monday 2 November 2026 — as the last day for self-lodgers.

If you use a registered tax agent, a different calendar applies. The important date is still 31 October — not because the return has to be finished by then, but because you generally need to be on that agent’s client list by then to access the ATO lodgement program.

What “on the list” actually means

It means the agent has added you as a current client in their practice software and reported you to the ATO. It does not mean the return is lodged. It does not mean every document has been sent. It means the ATO can see that a registered agent is responsible for the lodgement.

Once you are on that list by 31 October, most people move off the self-lodger deadline and onto the agent program. That program is staggered. Many returns are then due later in the financial year, often into May, depending on your lodgement history and whether prior-year returns are up to date.

Who still needs to treat 31 October as the hard date

The later program is not automatic for every situation. You should still plan around 31 October if:

  • You intend to lodge yourself
  • You have not yet engaged an agent and been added to their list
  • You have overdue prior-year returns, which can pull the current year back to an earlier date
  • This is your first year of lodging and the agent program does not yet apply in the usual way

If any of those apply, do not wait for the later dates you may have heard about from a friend who already has an agent.

Why the list date matters more than the lodgement date

October is when income statements are available, rental statements start arriving, and people finally sit down to the return. It is also when agent lists fill up. Engaging someone on 30 October with a shoebox of documents is not the same as being on the list with a clear file.

The practical sequence is: appoint the agent, get added to the list, then gather the records. The return can follow. Waiting until every statement is perfect before making contact is how people miss the 31 October cut-off and stay on the self-lodger deadline.

What to have ready when you get in touch

You do not need a complete file on day one. You do need enough for the agent to take you on and add you to the list:

  • Full name, date of birth and tax file number
  • Whether last year’s return was lodged, and by whom
  • A short picture of the year: salary, contracting, rental property, shares, crypto, a side business
  • Any overdue BAS, activity statements or prior-year returns you already know about

Income statements, rental schedules and receipts can follow. Missing one bank interest statement is not what keeps you off the list. Silence until late October is.

How Numbers & Sense can help

We prepare individual tax returns for PAYG employees, public servants, contractors and property investors. If you want to be on our list for 2025–26, the useful time to make contact is now — not the last week of October.

Book a 30-minute conversation or send a short note through the contact page. We will tell you what we need, add you to the list where we can take the work on, and set a clear date for the return itself.

This article is general information only and does not take your personal circumstances into account. It is not tax, financial or legal advice. Lodgement dates depend on your history with the ATO and whether you are on a registered tax agent’s current client list. Please speak with a registered tax agent before acting on anything discussed above.
